Been Away

It was a busy fall semester. I took two courses. Black

Writers Matter and Medieval Heroes. Both courses required almost a book per week. Plus, one course was nearly an essay per week. The big question is, "Did I learn a lot?" Of course, I learned a lot. In Black Writers Matter, I learned how little I knew about Black issues in Canada. I look at Black people now with far more respect for what they are going through and what they have put up with, daily and historically. The one topic I knew the least about was systemic racism within various institutions in Canada. Starting with police, hospitals, and social services. In my brief image, I took away from the course, no matter where you are if you are Black, you are treated differently than if you were white.

In my Medieval Heroes, I learned about the deep history of heroes and how they have not changed over the years. Mainly I grew to have a sympathetic eye and ear for them. There is sacrifice in being a hero. In Egil's Saga, I saw a very human man with vulnerable feelings and challenging life, especially when he faced his elderly years. This is what education is about, learning about subjects that are difficult to accept.
